## summary # the short version

Senior software engineer, nine years in: startups, big tech, and now a regulated medical device. I like backends that stay boring under load, data systems that tell the truth, and delivery pipelines that make shipping unremarkable.

I build with AI tools every day, from generative AI that writes release notes and automates business processes to coding agents that behave like a very fast, very literal colleague. They reward the habits I already had: clear specs, honest tests, careful review.

## next # where I'm headed

🌱 open source
Give back to the tools I lean on every day, and release more of my own small ones.
🤖 ai-native
Make agent-assisted development dependable. Specs, tests, traceability and review are the harness; regulated-software habits turn out to fit well.
🔀 workflows
Smaller teams, more agents. Help work out who reviews what, what "done" means now, and how people still learn the craft.
📉 economics
When code gets cheap, judgement gets expensive. Curious what that does to build vs buy, team shape, and what is worth building at all.
🎲 play
Small, odd, well-made things. Games, calendars and tarot live at kahal.dev.

## experience # the story so far

Senior Software Engineer @ Healthplus.ai, Amsterdam Jul 2026 – present

<1 s median responseSOUP gaps 39 → 1261 requirements triaged

  • Own the backend of a clinical decision-support medical device (FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Azure), from design to regulated release under IEC 62304 (Medical device software – Software life cycle processes).
  • Brought every results endpoint under a 1 s median response time by adding database indexes and caching JWT signing keys and Azure credentials.
  • Put the regulatory requirements set under version control as code (Doorstop), triaged 261 requirements that had no traceability links, and built the validation reports and review tooling.
  • Redesigned the release and verification and validation (V&V) process with the quality lead around docs-as-code and requirements-as-code, improving engineering workflow while keeping regulatory compliance and internal documentation standards intact.
  • Led release documentation for a regulated release (release notes, V&V plan, label verification) and cut accepted SOUP (Software of Unknown Provenance) gaps from 39 to 1.
  • Authored the next major version's 61-item data interface specification, containerised model deployment design and architecture evaluation criteria.
  • Raised engineering standards: wrote a FastAPI style guide, added OpenTelemetry logging and tracing, simplified role-based access control and drafted a secrets-management plan.

Senior Software Engineer @ Agriplace (now Simvia), Amsterdam Jun 2024 – Jun 2026

CI 20 → 5 minfirst data lakehouseautomated DORA reports

  • Set up the data engineering foundation on my own: the first data lakehouse on AWS, and a BI tool (Metabase) for internal insights.
  • Led the architecture of a compliance and audit platform, designing for form versioning, semantic data structure and long-term analytics to head off scalability risks.
  • Drove technical strategy by pushing back on excessive customisation, keeping the platform focused on scalability, speed and standardisation.
  • Made the architectural calls when integrating two platforms: a single source of truth for key datasets, and ORM/DB relationships to prevent sync issues.
  • Built a system that tracks deployments across all projects and repositories, producing automated DORA dashboards and monthly reports.
  • Automated releases with a pipeline that aggregates GitHub, Jira, CircleCI and Sentry and uses generative AI to post concise release notes in Slack.
  • Added Justfiles with common commands to every repository, as living documentation of engineering workflows and a faster onboarding.
  • Built a content syncing pipeline with stable identifiers for master data, simplifying new staging environments and formalising the staging, QA and content release process.
  • Cut the CI pipeline from 20 minutes to 5 through test suite optimisations, among other DevOps improvements across the team.

Software Engineer @ bloomon, Amsterdam Apr 2023 – May 2024

B Corp 2023event-sourced stock

  • Owned technical solutions and system design across critical warehouse domains: supply chain logistics, production flow and real-time stock management.
  • Built and deployed an end-to-end quality control system for fulfilment that inspects faults early, reducing late-stage errors and improving customer experience.
  • Led data work for company governance, extending internal tooling and metadata stores to manage supplier certification data and historical reports, contributing to the B Corp certification in 2023.
  • Designed and contributed to a high-availability, event-sourced stock monitoring system for perishable inventory, using Google Cloud Pub/Sub for real-time integration across teams.

Software Engineer @ Meta (Facebook), London Mar 2021 – Mar 2023

99.99% uptime76M+ hitstop CSAT 2022

  • Defined and built a prioritisation framework that evaluated over 205 Meta developer products, so support functions could focus on the clients and products generating the most revenue.
  • Led the migration of the search backend for bug search on developers.facebook.com, at 99.99% uptime and over 76 million hits to date.
  • Domain expert for triaging complex support cases across key Meta APIs and SDKs, specialising in the Messaging APIs (Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp).
  • Scored the highest CSAT across the entire global support team in 2022.

Software Engineer @ Coalface Capital, Dublin May 2018 – Feb 2021

−50% cloud computefeed onboarding: days → minutes

  • Led a cost-saving migration of the enterprise database from MS SQL Server to PostgreSQL, cutting monthly cloud compute bills by 50% by eliminating licence fees.
  • Designed a scalable, event-based data architecture on Kafka that removed database query load and cut onboarding of new high-volume market data feeds from days to minutes.
  • Automated the MLOps pipeline with periodic retraining and recalibration of models, enabling rapid deployment of new algo-trading strategies and backtesting on new instruments.
  • Built a centralised monitoring, alerting and reporting system as a single source of truth for business processes and cloud infrastructure, reducing troubleshooting downtime for traders.

Software Engineer Intern @ Modular Automation, Shannon Summer 2017

adopted immediately

  • Built a real-time data visualisation system on top of on-site SQL databases, giving engineers live metrics (temperature, speed) from manufacturing machinery for fault diagnosis.
  • The dashboard was adopted immediately and sped up testing of new apparatus for contact lens curing (Johnson & Johnson Vision Care) and microchip manufacturing (Analog Devices).
